Connecticut Emergency Medical Service Instructor (EMS-I) Course

 

Course Description

Echo Hose Ambulance Training Center offers a 90-hour Emergency Medical Services Instructor course.  This course introduces the multiple intelligences of the adult learner, characteristics of effective instructors, and teaching techniques to improve student success. This program will prepare the Instructor Candidate to develop and teach EMS programs in adherence to the 2007 Scope of Practice and 2009 National Education Standards. The course curriculum involves lectures, hands-on practical training, and online learning.  In addition, there will be a 25-hour student teaching time component required after successful completion.  Candidates that successfully complete this course will be eligible to apply for State of Connecticut certification as an Emergency Medical Services Instructor.

Requirements & Certification

The requirements for EMS-Instructor certification in Connecticut are: 

  • The applicant must be certified in Connecticut as an EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic and be able to demonstrate active service as an EMS provider for at least 24 months in the last 36 months.
  • The applicant must complete a department-approved EMS-Instructor certification course.
  • The applicant must demonstrate a grade of 90% or higher on an EMT-Refresher examination in the last 12 months (this may be completed during the EMS-I course at one of Echo Hose Training Center’s EMT Refresher courses).
  • The applicant must log at least 25 hours of student teaching time under currently certified Emergency Medical Services Instructors.
  • The applicant must submit two letters of recommendation from 2 currently certified Emergency Medical Services Instructors.
  • Participants may apply to complete student instruction hours with Echo Hose Ambulance Training Center’s EMS team or may arrange to complete their teaching hours with other EMS Instructors.
  • Once all requirements are completed, participants may submit their certification application to OEMS.
  • All EMS courses must be approved by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and must meet the course-specific requirements set by the Department.

            

25 hours of Student teaching requirements must include (not included as part of course)

  • Development and use of lesson plans
  • Following, and understanding objectives (Affective, Cognitive, and Psychomotor)
  • Teaching in the following areas: a. small group sessions b. direct classroom (large group) instruction c. Student-centered teaching methodology
  • Psychomotor instruction and evaluation
  • Student remediation

This course includes all necessary books and materials including:

 

  • Teaching Health Careers Education textbook
  • 11th Edition of Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Book, Instructor Toolkit and Premier Navigate 2 access.
  • 11th Edition of Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Book
  • All National Educational Material

 

Dates of Class & Cost

Cost of course:  $1200

 Payment plans are available $600.00 deposit to reserve seat in the class (non-refundable). $600 Due midway in class
